Bagnaia: Music videos, Misano and rising to stardom

Pecco chats in-depth to CNN about his journey - from meeting Rossi, becoming a MotoGP™ race winner and more

Over at the Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas, a race he went on to finish third in, Ducati Lenovo Team’s Francesco Bagnaia sat down with CNN to discuss in-depth about his journey to MotoGP™ stardom.

The name Pecco Bagnaia is fast becoming a household name. Not just in MotoGP™, or in Italy – but across the globe. As one of the great sporting icons – Valentino Rossi (Petronas Yamaha SRT) – hangs up his leathers at the end of the season, Italy possesses a few names that look ready to step into The Doctor’s boots. Pecco is certainly one of them.

Speaking to CNN, Bagnaia reveals where the nickname Pecco came from and recalls the first time he met idol turned mentor and friend, Rossi.

“My sister is only 20 months older than me,” says Bagnaia from COTA’s media centre. “When we were young, calling me 'Francesco' was difficult for her, so she was calling me 'Pecco, Pecco, Pecco!' every morning, like this, and I liked it.”

Meeting your heroes is always a nerve-racking experience, and the same can be said for Pecco when Rossi walked into the restaurant he was eating at: “I remember very well the first time I met him. We were having dinner… and Vale with our trainer came into the restaurant. I was very nervous to meet my idol. It was strange to have my idol in front of me and shaking hands.

“I think now we are good friends, and we are speaking a lot about my championship. In the last month he has always been speaking to me about being always the best, and to be better every time.”

From staring in a music video to winning at his beloved Misano, Bagnaia’s chat with CNN is well worth a read.
