Chinese Team Zongshen aim for Chinese GP

Chinese Team Zongshen made a play to participate in the Grand Prix of China by selecting two local Chinese riders as 250cc team representatives.

With this weekend seeing the very first Chinese GP, the team had high hopes for selected riders Zheng Peng and Zhu Wang.

Unfortunately for the team, both riders failed to pass the qualification stages, which saw 107 riders eager to ride.

Team Manager Michel Marquetot said that the riders will take part as wildcard riders in five GPs this year, but the team are aiming for MotoGP.

"The GP is important, but it's only a stage for us. We'll participate in five races this season, to prepare the next year, when we'll do the same, including one or two wildcard entries in MotoGP. Our goal is to be in MotoGP in 2007, with a very important technical support and a machine completely innovated.

"Our riders are young, they did not make it on the track like other Chinese riders. But they have made some progress, also stopped by some problems, and they improved their time laps at the end of the sessions. We think our results in Le Mans will be better because it is a circuit they know from riding in Supersport."

18.000 employees work for Zongshen. They also produce bikes; car and boat engines and generators.
