Cold and wet for British ‘warm-up'

The Derbyshire weather came to spice things up at Donington Park this morning ahead of the warm-up for the British GP, the track being completely soaked by early rain, which stopped about half an hour before the 125cc session.

Former World Champion Kenny Roberts lapped in 1'43.948 to finish the MotoGP session ahead of Valentino Rossi and the rest of the pack. Movistar Honda's Marco Melandri was third fastest ahead of Ducati Marlboro riders Carlos Checa and Loris Capirossi. The top 10 was completed by five Honda riders: Max Biaggi, Troy Bayliss, Alex Barros, Sete Gibernau and Nicky Hayden.

In the minor class, Gabor Talmacsi was the quickest, with a fastest lap set in 1'51.039 – almost 15 seconds off the qualifying pace. The Hungarian finished ahead of Spanish rookie Jordi Carchano, who was 1'865 adrift. Aprilia's Mattia Pasini was third ahead of Tom Lüthi and Julian Simon.

Many riders were caught out by the tricky conditions: Bautista, Simoncelli, Poggiali and Faubel joined a list of eleven riders to crash out in the session, all walking away uninjured.

The 250cc riders also had to change to rain tyres for their 20-minute session. The best time was posted by Japanese rider Hiroshi Aoyama in 1'46.492, topping the timesheets ahead of privateer rider Sylvain Guintoli. Spaniard Hector Barbera was third fastest, edging out pole setter and fellow countryman Dani Pedrosa by only 0.048s. Japanese rookie Yuki Takahashi completed the top 5. Italian veteran Andrea Ballerini was the only rider to crash in the quarter-litre class.
