Title-challenger Simoncelli underlines intentions

In pole position and with a chance of becoming 250cc World Champion on Sunday in Australia Marco Simoncelli started the day in fine form.

Marco Simoncelli was the fastest man on track in the quarter litre class warm-up at the start of a day which could see him wrap up the 250cc World title.

Simoncelli topped the warm-up timesheet by nearly half a second ahead of Julian Simon (Repsol KTM) in second place, whilst Alvaro Bautista (Mapfre Aspar), Mika Kallio (Red Bull KTM) and Roberto Locatelli (Metis Gilera) were also in the top five.

Simoncelli could take the 250cc title today by finishing either first or second at Phillip Island, depending on where his closest championship challengers finish. If he wins the race and Bautista finishes no higher than ninth and Kallio does not finish on the podium - or if the Italian finishes second and Bautista finishes no higher than fifteenth and Kallio no higher than seventh - the Metis Gilera man will be the new champion.
