Late push from Faubel leaves rivals trailing

Valencia CF – Honda SAG rider Héctor Faubel was on the pace in the final free practice session on a soaking wet morning at Motegi.

The Polini Grand Prix of Japan’s free practice sessions concluded on Saturday morning with Héctor Faubel the quickest of the 250cc participants in rainy conditions.

The Valencia CF – Honda SAG rider handled the heavy precipitation better than any of his quarter litre class counterparts, shooting to the top of the timing screens with a late best effort of 2’07.824, to put him 0.281s ahead of second quickest rider Karel Abraham (Carbion AB Motoracing).

Also in the top five were Qatar podium finisher Mike di Meglio (Mapfre Aspar Team), Metis Gilera’s World Champion Marco Simoncelli (who crashed with two minutes to go but was not hurt) and Team Toth Aprilia’s Mattia Pasini.

The top ten was completed by Alex Baldolini (WTR San Marino Team), Thomas Luthi (Emmi – Caffe Latte), home rider Hiroshi Aoyama (Scot Racing Team), Álex Debón (Aeroport Castello-Blusens) and title hopeful Álvaro Bautista (Master Mapfre).

Axel Pons crashed as the riders completed their final laps, under the bridge just after turn five, walking away apparently unscathed but leaving his Pepe World Team Aprilia machine lying in the middle of the track – to be removed shortly afterwards by marshals.
