Simoncelli explains Misano mishap

Marco Simoncelli’s chances of retaining the 250cc title took a severe dent on Sunday at the Gran Premio Cinzano di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini.

Another DNF for Marco Simoncelli on Sunday at his home event was a bitter pill to swallow for the World Champion who appears to be losing his grip on the 250cc crown.

The Metis Gilera man was desperate for a home victory at the circuit which lies so close to his hometown of Cattolica but it was not to be as he slid out of contention on an unlucky 13th lap when chasing fellow Italian Mattia Pasini for the race lead.

Reflecting on the disappointing result Simoncelli explained, “I had a problem from the fourth lap with traction control, and the bike was cutting out at the wrong moments so I couldn’t ride properly. Later I tried to disconnect it and the bike worked better but the way it was reacting was a bit different to how it had been on the previous two days of the Grand Prix.”

“I was really just trying to stay as close to Mattia as possible, I wasn’t riding on the edge and I thought it was ok. On the Tramonto corner the rear slipped slightly and I thought I could control it but then it shook again and I had lost control totally so I went down. I’m disappointed because it was a good chance to pull back some important points, but it worked out exactly the opposite way. Now there are just four races left so we’ll see what happens.”
