Dovizioso delighted with second podium of season

The Italian feels his third place at Le Mans has underlined his potential for the campaign, proving that he can consistently challenge for top-three finishes.

Andrea Dovizioso was extremely pleased with his third place in the Monster Energy Grand Prix de France on Sunday, a result he feels proved that his opening-race podium in Qatar was not a one-off.

Third place at Le Mans took the Italian to third spot in the Championship standings, two points above his Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa with whom he battled for the final podium spot in the race.

“I’m so happy to have made the podium here. It was very important because I wanted to confirm that the result in Qatar was not a one-off. We have improved a lot during the winter, so this is another important step forward,” said Dovizioso, who missed out on the podium at the French track last season when Pedrosa beat him to third.

“I wanted a good result for the team, to thank them and also because of last year when Dani came from 10 seconds behind to overtake me on the very last lap. Also, I’m very pleased to be going to Mugello third in the Championship.”

Dovizioso had to bide his time to overtake his team-mate in the race, and finally got past the Spanish rider on the final lap to ensure he made the podium. His final position was made all the more impressive given that he rose from seventh place on the grid.

“It was a tough race,” he admitted. “At the beginning I took a lot of risks to recover from starting on the third row. Once I caught Dani it was hard to get past and I knew Nicky (Hayden) was very close behind so I had to find a way past. I waited for four laps, worked out my strategy and I made my move on the last lap at the corner I’d planned.”

“This is a good start to the season, we worked a lot during the winter and Honda keeps working hard. We are close to the leaders - though still not close enough because our target is to fight for wins. We’ll go to Mugello with a lot of confidence as this a special race for me,” Dovizioso stated.
