Frustrating Aragón experience for Dovizioso

Frustrating Aragón experience for Dovizioso

The Repsol Honda rider was involved in a thrilling battle with Ben Spies for fifth but crashed on the final lap of the race. He also hopes to have a decision on his future for 2011 by the Motegi round.

Andrea Dovizioso was unable to hide his bitter disappointment at his second DNF of the season which came at the Gran Premio A-Style de Aragón on Sunday. The frustration was amplified by the fact that Italian’s race-ending crash came on the final lap after an intense battle with Ben Spies for fifth position.

“I’m really angry about the first two laps, I made two small mistakes and lost contact with Pedrosa, Hayden and Lorenzo,” said the Repsol Honda rider. “If I didn’t make those mistakes I’m sure I could have fought for third position from the beginning. My lap times with Spies were faster than Lorenzo and Nicky from the middle of the race, so we can’t be happy with that.”

The encounter between Dovizioso and Spies was an engrossing spectacle with the pair tightly matched for the latter stages of the race. As the closing laps approached there was little more than two-tenths of a second separating the pair, but on the final lap Dovizioso made a costly error.

“The fight with Spies was really aggressive but I made a mistake in turn 12. I tried to overtake him but changed direction too fast and high sided,” he said. “We were all really on the limit with the grip and it was easy to lose the grip with the rear. It’s bad for the Championship, we’re now fifth but Casey took a lot of points and Valentino is a point in front. Our aim is to fight for third.”

The issue of Dovizioso’s 2011 future is still an unresolved one, and he said he hopes to know more by the time Round 14 comes around in a fortnight.

“We still haven’t found a solution with the contract and it’s not ideal to be racing like this,” he said. “I hope to arrive in Japan with a decision but I don’t know. Our target now is to finish third in the Championship so I need to be thinking about that. We can be better and we need to understand how.”
