“Very important points” for Elías at Aragón

“Very important points” for Elías at Aragón

The Gresini Racing rider’s four-race winning streak was broken at the Gran Premio A-Style de Aragón, but fourth position maintained his healthy Moto2 Championship lead.

After four victories in succession Toni Elias’ fearsome winning run eventually came to an end at Aragón on Sunday when the Gresini Racing rider placed fourth.

Having started from the third row after a qualification session that ended with the 12th fastest time for Elías his race result was an impressive climb from down the grid, as he ensured that finishing off the podium did not harm what was already a substantial Championship lead going into the race.

“For sure we could have won this race but from behind it was difficult,” said Elías, who now stands 76 points clear at the top of the overall rankings with five rounds to go. “(Race winner) Iannone was very strong but fourth position and 13 points is very important for the Championship.”

A crowded entry into the sharp left-handed opening turn at Aragón claimed five riders in a crash, an incident Elías managed to avoid.

“We could have lost everything in the opening corner,” he said, before going on to analyse the impact of his qualification position on his race result.

“I think we didn’t win this race because of qualifying practice. I made a mistake, and in this class any mistake is very costly. I got a bad start and in the first corner it was hard, I was in the middle, but I had some luck and didn’t crash. I got up to fourth position and on the last lap I was just behind Simón and Talmacsi, but the race was finished by then. Fourth is okay and I’m happy.”

Next up for Elías on his quest to secure the inaugural Moto2 title is Motegi, a track at which he secured a premier class podium back in 2007.
