Strong showing from Dovizioso in testing conditions

The Repsol Honda rider was extremely pleased with the second fastest time in the first practice at Sepang, where he admitted the heat was “extreme”.

Fresh from achieving his first pole position of his premier class career in Japan last weekend, Andrea Dovizioso set about his weekend at Sepang in a similarly focused manner with the second best time of the first practice.

The Repsol Honda rider led for 25 minutes of the session with his time of 2’02.833 but was eventually beaten to top spot by Valentino Rossi by a margin of 0.109s. The pace and base set-up on his RC212V was of great encouragement to Dovizioso, who hopes to make further improvements ahead of Saturday’s qualifying session.

“I’m happy with this first session at Sepang because we were fast from the very beginning of the practice period,” said the Italian, who admitted that the ambient temperature of 38ºC and humidity measuring 37% had proven tough to handle. “Today the conditions were really extreme in terms of the heat - even more than we’re accustomed to here - so physically it was very hard.”

He continued: “We started from a good base today however. We will continue work on set-up improvements and adjustments to the electronics to increase the stability at the front end under braking. But I think we have found the limit of the tyres in these conditions.”

Dovizioso concluded by adding: “I will also try to adapt my riding style to make further improvements to the lap time tomorrow. Overall we made a good start today.”
