Redding “more eager than ever” as pre-season approaches

The Marc VDS Racing Team Moto2 rider is raring to go ahead of the start of the Testing schedule in February, and discussed his aims for the 2011 season with

One of the revelations of the inaugural Moto2 season in 2010, Scott Redding’s eighth place in the Championship has placed great expectations on the young British rider for 2011.

Riding for the Marc VDS Racing Team the former 125cc talent enjoyed a rousing latter half of the season having improved noticeably throughout the opening stages of the campaign, as he established an impressive command over the Suter MMX machine. Six front-row qualifications in the final eight rounds delivered podium results at Indianapolis and Phillip Island as Redding went from strength to strength, including an extraordinary ride at Estoril which saw him rise from 25th on the grid to place fourth and miss out on another rostrum finish by the finest of margins.

Now preparing for his second year in the category Redding is confident and relaxed as he heads towards pre-season Testing. A new personal training programme has the recently turned 18 year-old feeling fit and ready, and his enthusiasm to start work is greater than ever.

“I’ve never been this eager before to get back out on the bike,” Redding, who will next ride at the first official Moto2 Test at Valencia from February 10th-12th, told “We have a couple of things to test. We want to try and work on the aerodynamics because that’s what we were losing out on last year, quite a lot. There are a few other little things as well, like doing a race distance and trying to get the tyres working better. I would like to improve on my consistency towards the end of the race, and working on an old tyre.”

Looking ahead to the new season, which Redding will start as one of the riders tipped for success, he said: “We want to go race by race, take some podiums, and for sure we want to win a couple of races this year. At the start of the campaign we want to be consistent and just try and stay top five, top three even. We want to get some points early on and take it from there.”

The inevitable weight of expectation does not sit heavy on Redding, who continued: “There is a lot of pressure, a lot of people think I can do it this year, but I’m more relaxed going into it this year than I was last year. I want to take it easy, enjoy myself like I did last year. You go out to do one thing, and that is the best you can do. That’s what I do every time I go out on the bike.”

Redding is scheduled to test the MotoGP machine being developed by Suter next month, something he is also excited about. “I’m definitely looking forward to getting on the bigger bike. They’ve had Damian Cudlin working on it and the guy knows his stuff, so hopefully it’s working pretty well and we can develop it from there.”

The focus remains firmly on the 2011 Moto2 campaign for Redding however, as he aims for a strong second season in the class before even considering his next step. “I don’t want to go looking too far ahead and cut corners, I want to do it properly and we’ll see how it goes,” he concluded.
