Simoncelli and Aoyama say tyre choice is crucial

Marco Simoncelli and Hiroshi Aoyama both established a solid pace during the opening free practice session at the Gran Premio de Aragón, though both riders have plenty of work to do in the extended morning practice session on Saturday.

Simoncelli finished the first and only practice on Friday in fourth position, before a power shortage eventually forced the second practice cancellation. The Italian hopes to make progress in the areas of fuel consumption and tyre wear in tomorrow morning’s extended practice session.

It was also a positive outing for Aoyama, who finished tenth in the line up, though tyre wear is of main concern to the Japanese rider.

Marco Simoncelli:
“Unfortunately we can't really draw too many conclusions from just an hour on track but things didn't go badly, other than a few small problems in braking and with corner speed. We are lacking rear grip and the tyre goes off after just a few laps. I still think the rubber available to us is too soft and that's a worry for the race. We also have to work on fuel consumption. Overall this afternoon's cancellation was not what we needed.”

Hiroshi Aoyama:
“We tried some things this morning and did some work with the set-up and my feeling was pretty good, even though Aragon is not an easy circuit. Tyre wear is unpredictable and making the right choice for the race will be crucial.”
