Lüthi on top in eventful Mugello final free practice

Lüthi on top in eventful Mugello final free practice

In an eventful final Moto2™ free practice at the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM at Mugello it was Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Lüthi who came out of top in front of Marc Márquez and Andrea Iannone.

The session got off to a dramatic start as Pons 40 HP Tuenti’s Pol Espargaró was taken out in turn one by JiR Moto2’s Johann Zarco, who had taken a narrower angle into the corner and slid into the Spaniard as he tried to slow down. While Zarco walked away from the crash, Espargaró was taken to the Clinica Mobile for check-ups on a suspected injury to his right leg, yet was declared fit to ride in qualifying this afternoon. Zarco was handed a 15-place grid penalty after the session for riding in an irresponsible manner. No appeal was lodged by his team.

Whilst Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol’s Márquez had led for the majority of the session, Lüthi upped the pace in the final minutes to set a time of 1.52’795, ousting the Spaniard into second. Third spot went to Speed Master’s Iannone, sporting a red-livery bike today, who is looking for a solid qualifying this afternoon in front of his home fans.

Tech 3 Racing’s Bradley Smith, who was testing a new fairing design to improve aerodynamic performance came in fourth, yet did not better his time from yesterday. The Brit was followed by Italian the duo of Came IodaRacing Project’s Simone Corsi and Italtrans Racing Team’s Claudio Corti, who have been consistently fast across the weekend, as they look to be lapping up the home support.

Marc VDS Racing Team’s Scott Redding finished the morning in seventh, ahead of Corti’s teammate Takaaki Nakagami, who has been a regular in the top ten so far. NGM Mobile Forward Racing’s Alex de Angelis finished the session in ninth, yet like Smith, also did not improve his time from yesterday afternoon. Despite his early accident, Espargaró’s time was the tenth fastest in the session, yet more importantly, his time set in FP2 yesterday is still the fastest of the Moto2 class at the Mugello circuit.
