Morales, Torres and Ferrari are 2012 UEM European Champions

Morales, Torres and Ferrari are 2012 UEM European Champions

With 12,000 spectators in attendance today, the fifth UEM European Championship provided excitement for everyone as the 2012 Champions were decided in all three races.

Carmelo Morales made his mark in European motorcycle racing history thanks to yet another victory today. His triumph in the Superstock 1000 meant that the Spaniard has now been decorated four times in Europe. Last year’s champion and rider in the MotoGP™ World Championship, Iván Silva, couldn’t catch up to Morales and had to settle for second place. Xavi Forés finished in third after an early lead at the start of the race. Albert Santamaría also got on the podium as Junior European Champion.

In the Supersport 600, Jordi Torres managed to defend his title from last season after dominating the race from start to finish. Second and third position on the podium was mostly fought between Stefan Kerschbaumer and Miguel Ángel Poyatos, both of whom benefitted from Óscar Climent and Jaroslav Cerny being disqualified after their machines didn’t pass the post-race technical inspection. Miguel Ángel Poyatos also achieved Junior European Champion title.

Moto3™/125GP finished off today’s racing offering, as usual, a group race. After Marcos Ramírez, Fraser Rogers and Albert Arenas led at the start of the race, Spanish rider Ramírez crashed, taking out Arenas and forcing Rogers off the track. This meant that Italian rider Kevin Calia was able to push to the front, closely followed by fellow Italian Matteo Ferrari and Spaniard Juanfran Guevara. Only two laps before the end of the race, a merciless battle started. In the end, Matteo Ferrari was declared Champion of the UEM European Championship in this category, followed closely by Juanfran Guevara and Kevin Calia.

Following this year’s UEM European Championship, teams and riders will go back to their respective countries with the date for next year marked in their diaries – 6th October 2013.
