Folger leads the way in first Motegi outing

In the first Moto3™ practice session of the AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan in Motegi it was Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger who led the way ahead of Sandro Cortese and Zulfahmi Khairuddin.

On a track that started out slightly damp for the first session of the day, riders were immediately out on slick tyres as a strong sun overhead was rapidly drying the surface. And it was Folger who looked strong all session, finishing on top with a time of 2.00’219, ousting Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Cortese by just under three tenths. Completing the top three was AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin, who is keen to build momentum before his home race in a week’s time.

Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales, who must do well this weekend to keep his championship chances alive was fourth quickest, ahead of Cortese’s teammate Danny Kent, who was marginally less than half a second off the front. Team Italia FMI’s Romano Fenati, for whom this is a new circuit, did well to come in sixth. JHK t-shirt Laglisse’s Alberto Moncayo made a welcome appearance in the top ten once again, as he ousted RW Racing GP’s compatriot Luis Salom into eighth.

Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Miguel Oliveira and Caretta Technology’s Jack Miller completed the top ten. Riders seemed cautious in their first trip out on track, and it was only Racing Team Germany’s Louis Rossi who took a tumble 11 minutes before the end. He was able to re-mount and continue the session.
