Espargaró leads incident-filled final free Motegi practice

In a final free Moto2™ practice that saw numerous crashes at the AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan in Motegi it was Tuenti Movil HP 40’s Pol Espargaró who came out on top in front of Marc Márquez and Bradley Smith.

Espargaró was on blistering form as he set the fastest lap so far with a 1.51’192, which was a full six tenths ahead of second placed Márquez on board his Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol Suter machine. Tech 3 Racing’s Bradley Smith continued his good run of form from yesterday as he put his Mistral 610 bike in third once more.

His compatriot and Marc VDS Racing Team rider Scott Redding was only three hundredths behind him, which could promise an entertaining battle of the Brits come qualifying. Espargaró’s teammate Esteve Rabat came in fifth, despite suffering an awkward crash as he had to drop his bike in the gravel after running wide.

Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2 duo Jordi Torres and Nico Terol finished sixth and seventh respectively, with Blusens Avintia’s compatriot Julián Simón in eighth. Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Lüthi was ninth quickest, whilst QMMF Racing Team’s Anthony West put in a great performance in tenth.

As well as Rabat’s crash, and numerous runs off track for many riders pushing hard, SAG Team’s substitute rider Kohta Nozane crashed twice in the session, whilst Redding’s teammate Mika Kallio lost control of his bike after Márquez made contact with the Finn’s rear, causing him to crash heavily. Fortunately none of the riders that crashed were seriously hurt in the incidents.
