Folger fastest in first free practice in Sepang

In an eventful first Moto3™ free practice at the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix in Sepang it was Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger who was fastest ahead of Jakub Kornfeil and Zulfahmi Khairuddin.

Folger was on phenomenal pace in warm and dry conditions from the off as he posted a time of 2.15’097, which was over a second faster than his nearest challenger, Redox-Ongetta-Centro Seta’s Kornfeil. AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Khairuddin made his intentions clear this weekend by setting the third quickest time, with the Malaysian keen to get his first podium at his home round.

Red Bull KTM Ajo’s championship leader Sandro Cortese ended the morning in fourth, making a good start to what could be his title-winning weekend. Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Miguel Oliveira finished behind him in fifth, ahead of Racing Team Germany’s Louis Rossi, who was the last rider within 1.5s off the top. Last weekend’s race winner, Red Bull’s Danny Kent, came in seventh, ahead of Oliveira’s teammate Alex Rins.

Team Italia FMI’s Motegi podium-sitter Alessandro Tonucci and JHK t-shirt Laglisse’s Efrén Vázquez completed the top ten. Tonucci’s teammate Romano Fenati was pushed off track early on as TT Motion Events Racing’s Niklas Ajo touched him after a wobble, with the Italian fortunate to just run wide in the gravel.

One of the main talking points of the session was however that Blusens Avintia’s Maverick Viñales did not take part in the session, as he had quit the team on short notice. Further details to come shortly.
