Espargaró tops Moto2 test in Valencia

Espargaró tops Moto2 test in Valencia

The first test of the 2013 Moto2 season came to an end in Valencia today with Tuenti Movil HP 40’s Pol Espargaró topping the unofficial timesheets.

Rain had been forecast for the day, yet the Moto2™ contingent was met with sunny weather in the afternoon, where both newcomers and established riders took to the track to prepare for the next season. Espargaró, who was testing a new clutch and swingarm, as well as some new Dunlop tyres, came out on top at the end of the day with a lap of 1.34’9.

Julián Simón had his first outing on a Kalex machine, having switched to the Italtrans Racing Team. Having ridden a Suter and an FTR machine last year, the Spaniard was content with his day’s work and praised the German chassis. Marc VDS Racing Team’s Mika Kallio was marginally behind in third, with Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2’s Nico Terol putting his bike fourth, as he continued set-up work on his Suter machine, looking to build on his successful race weekend.

Marginally behind was Simón’s now teammate Takaaki Nakagami, with Interwetten-Paddock’s Tom Lüthi in tow. Lüthi was content to have managed to work through a busy testing schedule on his Suter bike, citing that this test was laying the groundwork for future testing to come.

There was no set theme to the day, with established riders working on improving or upgrading their current machines, while others were getting used to their new bikes. Johann Zarco was one such rider, taking out the Came IodaRacing Project Suter for the first time, and instantly feeling more comfortable.

The day also saw Danny Kent and Louis Rossi make their debuts in Moto2 on board the Tech 3 Racing Mistral 610. Both were pleased with their debut, as was British rider Kyle Smith, on the Blusens Avintia Suter bike. Simone Corsi and Mattia Pasini both debuted for the NGM Mobile Froward Racing team on Speed Up bikes, while for the same team Ricky Cardús tested its FTR.

Mike Di Meglio made his debut with the JiR Moto2 team, working heavily on bike set-up, while a Moriwaki bike was back on the grid with new Honda Asia Team Tady, ridden by Yuki Takahashi. SAG Team had a busy day, as not only regular rider Marcel Schrötter, but Xavier Siméon and Gino Rea went out for stints on the Bimota.
