Viñales and Salom start pre-season strongest in Valencia

JHK T-Shirt Laglisse’s Maverick Viñales started his season on board his new KTM in the ideal fashion by topping the timesheets on the first day of Valencia Moto3™ testing ahead of Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Luis Salom and Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins.

Viñales, who cited he was very pleased with the KTM’s power, set a best time of 1:40’715, beating KTM factory team new boy Salom by just over a tenth. Salom’s team manager Aki Ajo told earlier in the day that the KTM was a “completely new bike”, and that while the engine had had a bit of work done, the chassis was the main change, being both lighter, and having more set-up possibilities.

And the KTM certainly proved the bike to beat on the opening day as Rins placed his machine third, albeit over half a second off Viñales. Salom’s teammate, who is also new to the team, Zulfahmi Khairuddin, was the last man to get under the 1:42 barrier, as he relegated Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger on his Kalex KTM into fifth.

San Carlo Team Italia’s Romano Fenati, who started last season with a phenomenal outing in Qatar, was sixth fastest, and the only FTR Honda in the top ten as he came sixth. Redox RW Racing GP’s Jakub Kornfeil ended the day seventh, ahead of Efrén Vázquez, who has already taken well to the task of bedding in the new Mahindra bike.

He beat Red Bull’s Arthur Sissis and Estrella’s Alex Márquez who rounded out the top ten, as the first female in Moto3, Viñales’ teammate Ana Carrasco did incredibly well to end the first day 12th. Red Bull Rookie Champion Florian Alt finished in 28th on his Kiefer Racing Kalex KTM as he took his first steps in the World Championship.
