Smith given green light to race at Barcelona

Bradley Smith will undergo further examination after the next round of the championship in Barcelona, having been injured at Mugello last week. This will not affect his participation in the Gran Premio Aperol de Catalunya.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider crashed in second practice for the Italian Grand Prix on Friday afternoon, with his left hand becoming lodged underneath his sliding motorcycle. After courageously riding to ninth place in Sunday’s race, despite another accident in the Warm-Up session, the Englishman visited a hand specialist in San Marino.

“The good news is I will be fit to ride again at the next round at Barcelona,” Smith told on Tuesday, having visited the Ospedale di San Marino clinic.

“The bad news is I have a cracked bone in the scaphoid of my left wrist and the little finger on my left hand will be permanently bent. The doctors were unable to carry out the planned skin graft operation because the skin was so badly damaged around the little finger, but they are confident it will heal - as will the crack in the wrist.

“Rather than a skin graft, it was decided to replace the extension tendon I damaged with a wire. That will help to keep my finger straight, so it doesn’t keep on collapsing, and will basically do the job of the tendon. The finger has been pulled as tight as possible and the hope now is that the skin naturally heals itself. Now all I can do is wait and see whether the skin can heal naturally and that can be a long process.”

The injuries will be re-examined between the upcoming Catalan and Dutch races.

“After Catalunya I will get the finger checked out again to see how it is healing because it might be that I will need a skin graft at a later stage,” adds the 23-year-old. “The priority right now is to try and let it recover naturally. Once again, I want to thank all the Clinica Mobile staff and those responsible for my treatment in Italy because they are doing a wonderful job and I really appreciate it.”

In the meantime, Smith - who had planned to visit his family in Oxford this week - has now elected to remain in Italy before travelling to Barcelona early ahead of Round 6 of the season on 16th June. On Tuesday afternoon, he will begin physiotherapy in Imola, Bologna.
