Smith heads to hospital for skin graft

Following a morning of post-race testing at the Circuit de Catalunya, Bradley Smith travelled to Barcelona city centre in order to undergo a skin graft operation.

The procedure was scheduled to have been carried out in San Marino after the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, where in practice Smith had injured a finger and his wrist after left hand became lodged underneath his crashing Monster Yamaha Tech 3 bike. Ultimately, the little finger was too damaged for doctors to carry out the operation.

“I will have an operation at 5 o’clock,” Smith explained to on Monday, having last week travelled early to Barcelona after staying on in Italy in order to undergo physiotherapy. “The plan will be to do a skin graft on my little finger and also to put a screw inside the scaphoid, because I believe now is the time to fix these problems and recover as soon as possible.

“The next few races will have a lot of left-handers and that is where I am struggling the most, so I believe it is time to make sure I am 100% fit. Now is a good time and it will give me a few days of recovery before Assen. The most important thing is to be ready for the Sachsenring and Laguna Seca.”

Smith’s operation will be carried out at the Quiron Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona by Dr. Xavier Mir; he has also attended this week to Avintia Blusens’ Hiroshi Aoyama, who himself suffered hand injuries when crashing on Saturday.
