Crutchlow approves Lorenzo/Rossi decision

Crutchlow approves Lorenzo/Rossi decision

During the post-race test in Barcelona on Monday, Cal Crutchlow sampled the version of 2013 Yamaha chassis that had previously been turned down by the Yamaha Factory Racing's Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi. Ultimately, the Englishman would agree to do the same.

As Crutchlow competes in the current season for Monster Yamaha Tech 3, the Englishman is using a 2012-specification chassis. Two forms of 2013 chassis have been developed; earlier in the year, Factory riders Lorenzo and Rossi ran back-to-back comparisons between the pair, but at the Jerez post-race test decided to remain with the 2013 version with which they had started the season.

"We tried the chassis that the factory refused," Crutchlow told of the second of the two 2013 chassis. "I confirm today that I can see why they refused it and now I’m back on my normal (2012) chassis. We did all day on the new chassis and tried to find some positive points, but on the last run we went back to our old chassis and that was clearly a lot better.

"We worked on full tanks; so every time we left the pit lane the tank was completely full like at the start of a race, because that is where we need to work, and we used old tyres every time. I’m pleased with the results. A lot of the guys you see at the front were throwing a lot of tyres at the test today. We used two sets. I was pleased because, on my last run with my normal chassis, I did the same lap time – then with 25 laps on the tyres – that I had at the start of the run."

Despite being unimpressed with the version of 2013 chassis he tried out, Crutchlow was pleased to report improvements to his more familiar 2012 specification:

"I think we have found something positive with the setup of the bike but, as I said, we confirm that the (new) chassis is not better than the one we have."

On Sunday, Crutchlow topped the pre-race Warm-Up session but would crash out of the Catalan Grand Prix while running fourth and trying hard to catching the leaders. This marked his first race retirement since last year’s season finale in Valencia.
