Viñales leads opening practice at Brno

Maverick Viñales has topped the first practice session ahead of this weekend’s bwin Grand Prix České republiky. The Team Calvo rider led Red Bull KTM’s championship-leading Luis Salom, with Estella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Rins third.

Fresh from his wins in the last two races, Rins led the way from teammate Alex Marquez for much of the session, but a late shaking up of the order saw names moving around the timesheets.

Viñales moved ahead with his best lap of 2’09.489, as Salom – riding with an injured foot following a crash at Indianapolis last Saturday – missed out by just one hundredth of a second. Rins was therefore demoted to third.

On a bright morning at Brno, Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Jonas Folger was fourth ahead of La Fonte Tascaracing’s Alessandro Tonucci, moving up into the top five courtesy of a strong late effort. This demoted Marquez to sixth spot ahead of Mahindra Racing duo Efren Vazquez and Miguel Oliveira.

There were falls for Ongetta-Centro Seta’s Isaac Viñales and San Carlo Team Italia’s Francesco Bagnaia, but both walked away.

Moto3™ will continue with Free Practice 2 from 1:10pm local time (GMT +2).
