Autosport: ‘Rossi says he lacked Marquez’s self-belief’

Valentino Rossi claims self-belief is the main difference between his maiden 500 season in 2000 and Marc Marquez’s debut MotoGP™ campaign in 2013.

Riding for Honda in 2000, newcomer Rossi impressed by finishing overall runner-up to Kenny Roberts Jr. courtesy of two race victories and a further eight podium finishes. So far this year, Marquez has achieved five wins from 12 Grands Prix and missed the rostrum on only one occasion, when he crashed out at Mugello.

"What Marquez is doing this year is very impressive," Rossi is quoted as saying by Autosport. "For me, more than anything he has the mind. He started this year to win the championship.

"In 2000, when I was a rookie, I didn't do that; I thought it would be impossible in my first year. Maybe for that reason I didn't win, but Marquez arrived with the mindset to win in his first season. I have never seen a rookie like him."
