Viñales heads Warm-Up before crashing

Maverick Viñales has topped the Sunday Warm-Up ahead of the Gran Premio Iveco de Aragón, only to crash at the end of the session. Pole-sitter and local man Alex Rins was second while Jonas Folger completed the top three.

As air temperatures reached 17°C on a clear morning, Viñales (Team Calvo, second on grid) topped the timesheets with his best effort of 2’00.079, edging out Rins (Estrella Galicia 0,0, pole position) by a quarter of a second while Jonas Folger (Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3) put in another sterling effort to crack the top three despite having undergone surgery for an ankle fracture after Misano.

The top six was completed by Mahindra Racing duo Miguel Oliveira and Efren Vazquez plus championship leader Luis Salom (Red Bull KTM Ajo, eighth place on the grid), while front-row starter and Rins’ teammate Alex Marquez was seventh. There was drama towards the end of the session as, following a stoppage for Aspar’s Eric Granado, both Marquez and Viñales crashed at the same corner; the former was able to crawl back to the pits, while the latter returned to the paddock on foot.

The Moto3™ Gran Premio Iveco de Aragón starts at 11am local time (GMT +2).
