Folger quickest in Australian Warm-Up

Folger quickest in Australian Warm-Up

Jonas Folger was quickest as the Moto3™ Warm-Up kicked off Sunday track action at Phillip Island. The Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3 rider led Alex Rins and Isaac Viñales.

With sunshine, a breeze and no immediate threat of rain, Folger led the way at the start of a day that is likely to prove critical in the championship battle. The German posted the leading lap time of 1’37.483, one tenth of a second ahead of title contender Rins (Estrella Galicia 0,0) with the elder of the two Viñales cousins  (Ongetta-Centro Seta) only a further 18 thousandths in arrears.

Efren Vazquez (Mahindra Racing), Australian Jack Miller (Caretta Technology – RTG) and championship leader Luis Salom (Red Bull KTM Ajo, starting from pole position) completed the top six, with third and final championship challenger Maverick Viñales (Team Calvo) 12th.

Matteo Ferrari (Ongetta-Centro Seta) visited the Medical Centre following a crash at the end of the session. It was then that a fracture of the fourth metacarpus was discovered, meaning the Italian is forced to miss the race. There were also crashes for Jasper Iwema (RW Racing GP) and Lorenzo Baldassarri (GO&FUN Gresini Moto3), although both riders walked away unaided.

The Moto3™ Tissot Australian Grand Prix begins at 1pm local time (GMT +11).
