Viñales heads delayed Sunday practice

Viñales heads delayed Sunday practice

Maverick Viñales topped the timesheets as Moto3™ commenced Sunday track action at Twin Ring Motegi. The weather played its part once again, with a lack of visibility resulting in a delayed start as well as a mid-session red flag.

Viñales led the way with his best effort of 1’59.701, leading Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Alex Marquez by just under two tenths of a second. Championship leader Luis Salom (Red Bull KTM Ajo) was third from Marquez’s teammate Alex Rins, who will start this afternoon’s race from pole position. This morning session, longer than the usual Warm-Up as a result of the lack of track time so far this weekend, gave the riders a chance to working on setups on a mostly dry track surface.

There were various wet patches around the circuit, but clear blue sky in the vicinity of Motegi. However, there was also a somewhat bizarre localised thick fog at Turn 1 which resulted in a short stoppage. The session was then extended to allow for a further ten minutes of running time, thus resulting in the decreasing of duration for the Moto2™ and MotoGP™ Free Practice sessions.

The Moto3™ AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan begins at 11am local time (GMT +9).
