Espargaro quickest on Sunday morning

Espargaro quickest on Sunday morning

Moto2™ championship leader Pol Espargaro led the way as final practice took place ahead of the racing action at Twin Ring Motegi on Sunday.

Due to the disruption of the weekend so far, with a lack of visibility and heavy rain, the field had only had one session of qualifying on Saturday. Sunday’s morning period was shorter than anticipated due to further delays during the preceding Moto3™ session, resulting in 35 minutes of action for the intermediate class.

With a dramatic improvement of conditions for Sunday practice, Tuenti HP 40’s Espargaro - who will start seventh on the grid and could win the title this afternoon - topped the timesheets under clear skies, finishing ahead of Marc VDS Racing Team’s Mika Kallio and Maptaq SAG Zelos Team’s Xavier Simeon. Incidentally, it is Kallio who will start from his first Moto2™ pole for the race.

The top six was rounded out by Italtrans Racing Team’s Takaaki Nakagami (the leading Japanese rider), Espargaro’s teammate Tito Rabat and Marc VDS’ Scott Redding, who is riding in pain with an injured left wrist but hopes to take the championship battle on to Valencia in two weekends’ time. Tech3’s Danny Kent hit trouble and will miss the race due to a right collarbone fracture.

The Moto2™ AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan will start at 12:20pm local time (GMT +9).
