Lorenzo hails improvement in tyre performance

Phillip Island Day 1 pace-setter Jorge Lorenzo admits that Bridgestone’s 2014 tyres are far better than he first believed, having suffered issues with the new rubber in Malaysia last week.

At the first Malaysian test in early February, teams had had access to both the 2013 and 2014 Bridgestone tyres. However, upon the return to Sepang last week, only the 2014 tyres were available. It was after testing with these that Lorenzo had criticized their performance in the hot and humid conditions, before refusing to speak to the media at all on the second of the three days.

However, having now moved on to the Phillip Island tyre test, the two-time MotoGP™ World Champion is pleased to report that handling is much better.

"We started with the ‘standard’ tyre that we raced last year, then Bridgestone gave us three new tyres and we did two runs with each one," Lorenzo explains of his Monday programme in Australia. "Finally, the last one was the best one – even better than the standard one. After Sepang I told the press that the tyre Bridgestone gave us for 2014 is too hard for everyone – especially for Yamaha – but with normal conditions and normal tarmac there is no problem, as we have seen here."

Furthermore, Lorenzo topped the timesheets at Phillip Island on Day 1, courtesy of his leading lap time which came in the form of 1’29.213.
