Nakagami leads as final test begins

Takaaki Nakagami topped the timesheets as the last pre-season Moto2™ test commenced in Jerez on Tuesday. The Idemitsu Honda Team Asia rider led the way from Interwetten Paddock Moto2’s Tom Luthi and Speed Up’s Sam Lowes.

With this test running until Thursday, the field knew at the start of Tuesday that only three days of track action remained before travelling to Qatar for the season-opening race. With this in mind, the teams and riders were especially pleased to witness sunshine, clear blue skies and pleasant ambient temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius.

Nakagami’s leading lap time was 1’42.587, which was two tenths of a second quicker than Luthi - the Swiss looking to improve the turning of his machine but generally satisfied with the package - while impressive British newcomer Lowes was a further tenth adrift. Pons HP 40’s Luis Salom and Tasca Racing Moto2’s Alex de Angelis rounded out the top five, while Johann Zarco was sixth for AirAsia Caterham Moto Racing while focusing on chassis geometry and suspension settings.

The day was particularly important as this was the first time all riders had taken to the track with the latest ECU and Honda engine, which are expected to bunch things up only further. However, some names could be found lower down the timesheet than perhaps anticipated. Salom’s team-mate and reigning Moto3™ World Champion Maverick Viñales was 14th, having crashed on the last day of the previous test; he spent the day readjusting to the bike and is planning a race simulation on Thursday.

Testing continues on Wednesday, with the intermediate class field taking to the Andalucian circuit once again from 10am local time (GMT +1).
