Miller moves ahead as Jerez test continues

Jack Miller jumped atop the timesheets as the penultimate day of Moto3™ pre-season testing took place in Jerez. On Wednesday, the Australian led the way from Spain’s Isaac Viñales and Great Britain’s Danny Kent.

This week’s track action had begun on Tuesday when, despite pleasant ambient temperatures of 22 degrees Celsius, the field had been affected by strong crosswinds at the southern Spanish circuit. On this occasion, such gusts did not disturb proceedings although there was a more overcast sky at the Spanish Grand Prix venue.

As his Red Bull KTM Ajo team concentrated chiefly on trying new parts as delivered by KTM, Miller set a leading 1’46.259 lap time; the Queensland rider was pleased to make up for lost time, having been struck by mechanical problems on Tuesday afternoon.

Calvo Team’s Viñales and Czech Jakub Kornfeil sandwiched Red Bull Husqvarna Ajo’s Danny Kent into third place, while the top five was rounded out by Efren Vazquez for Saxoprint-RTG. Phillip Oettl was next up, sixth for Interwetten Paddock Moto3 ahead of Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3’s Juanfran Guevara and Mahindra Racing’s Miguel Oliveira. Sky Racing Team by VR46 riders Francesco Bagnaia and Romano Fenati filled ninth and 13th positions.

In the meantime, Estrella Galicia 0,0 riders Alex Rins and Alex Marquez were tenth and 11th while continuing the task of improving their new engine, which all Honda-powered riders will have received for the Qatar Grand Prix. However, Rins continued to experience difficulties under heavy braking as a result of his recent wrist operation.

A total of 32 riders took to the track, including Hafiza Rofa who substituted for Malaysian compatriot Hafiq Azmi at SIC-Ajo. The latter choose to sit out, recovering from an injury sustained to his right wrist in an enduro bike crash near his home. In the meantime, his stand-in only rode during the morning before suffering an accident which destroyed his KTM and thus truncated the programme.

Thursday will mark the third and final day of the Moto2™/Moto3™ test in Jerez, with Moto3™ first taking to the track from 11:20am local time (GMT +1).
