Kallio encouraged to be catching Rabat

Mika Kallio celebrated his second Moto2™ race victory in Spain on Sunday, winning in controlled fashion from pole position at Jerez. As a result, he moves to within 16 points of championship-leading team-mate Tito Rabat.

Finn Kallio - whose first Moto2™ win had come at Brno in the Czech Republic last year - clinched the Jerez pole on Saturday by just under three tenths of a second, then leading from starting lights to chequered flag to win Sunday’s race by 2.4 seconds.

“It was a really great weekend and a great race,” the Marc VDS Racing Team rider commented, having been joined on the podium by team owner Marc van der Straten. “We did a really good job all weekend, the team was unbelievably good and we improved the settings on the bike all the time.

“I was on pole. We had only one plan for the race: make a good start, stay just in front all the time, make my own rhythm and pace and concentrate 100% all the time. I managed to make it. It was unbelievable and maybe one of the best races for me ever.”

He went on to discuss the championship situation with 14 rounds remaining:

“I am really happy with this and of course now we have caught my team-mate Tito a bit in the points, which is important for the championship. This weekend, I don’t think we could have done anything better so I am really, really happy.”

The Moto2™ fight continues at Le Mans in France on Sunday 18 May.
