Viñales ecstatic to achieve first podium finish

Five races into his third full season in the World Championship Isaac Viñales finally stepped onto the podium for the first time, having finished third in a brilliant Moto3™ race at the Monster Energy Grand Prix de France.

The 20 year-old rider battled hard throughout the 24-lap race having qualified at the back of the second row. Going into the final lap as one of eight riders in contention for a podium spot the KTM-equipped Calvo Team rider held his nerve to cross the finish line just +0.23s behind race winner Jack Miller.

Viñales has taken a clear step forward this season in terms of competitiveness and having already collected 44 points to place himself sixth in the standings he is well on target to improve on his 16th place overall finish in last year’s championship – which he concluded with 47 points in total.

After the race a delighted Viñales stated, “I’m very, very happy. More than anything this comes down to the great work we have been doing since the preseason got started. In the first three races it was a bit more difficult for us, but last time out in Jerez we took a step forward by finishing fifth and now we’re on the podium. It was a hard race and in Moto3 you know that with eight riders fighting hard on the last lap anything can happen. But I was enjoying my riding and now we know we can be up front, which is the most positive thing.”
