Hernandez impresses on rainy Friday

Both Yonny Hernandez and Andrea Iannone finished inside the top ten on Friday at the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini.

Columbia’s Hernandez was a surprise leader of Free Practice 1, 1.693s clear of Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda). Confident in the tricky conditions, Hernandez was able to place his Open spec Ducati at the top of the timesheet.

This form continued into Free Practice 2 where Hernandez was fifth. A time of 1’50.714s was just 1.519s off Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), who led overall. Hernandez finished second on the combined times thanks to his FP1 lap time.

Teammate Iannone had a tougher start to his home race weekend, crashing heavily at Turn 1 in Free Practice 1 and sitting out much of the session icing his ankle. His early lap times were enough to see him finish in seventh that session.

Free Practice 2 also saw the Italian crash, resulting in finishing ninth in the session. A time of 1’51.603s in FP2 had 2015 factory Ducati rider ninth overall.

Hernandez commented, “I’m happy with the performance. I feel great in the rain, I’m always good in tricky conditions. The track is very slippery so I was working a lot with the bike. I’m quite good in the rain and hopefully we can keep it up tomorrow and get some points in the race on Sunday. It’s my best practice result of the season so it’s good!”

Iannone added, “My feeling is not so bad as I’m quite fast in both sessions. But when I push a little more the front feeling is very bad. The tyres don’t work and don’t have good grip with the asphalt. I don’t know how to fix it, I crashed with the hard and the soft compounds.”
