Maverick Viñales satisfied with third win of 2014

The brilliant rookie season of Maverick Viñales continued with a third victory of 2014 on Sunday at Phillip Island.

The reigning Moto3™ World Champion is heading for MotoGP™ in 2015 and again in Australia it was easy to see why Suzuki have recruited him for their return to the World Championship.

Viñales registered his third consecutive podium result and his second win in three races as he rode brilliantly at the Island circuit, managing to hold the race lead when neither of the more experienced Marc VDS Racing Team pair and championship rivals Tito Rabat and Mika Kallio could do so.

With Tom Luthi (Interwetten Sitag) and Sam Lowes (Speed Up) also in the hunt it was Viñales who seized the initiative in the final stages after the race lead had been exchanged on numerous occasions, the brilliant young Spaniard eventually crossing the line 1.329s ahead of Luthi.

Paginas Amarillas HP 40 rider Viñales was asked if he had felt that he had a good chance of the win as the race progressed, to which he responded, “No, for sure I didn’t know it because the other riders were so fast. But I was thinking that if I had good pace I could make a gap and win.”

He continued: “It was a really interesting race. There was a good battle with all the riders in the front group and it reminded a little bit of Moto3 last year. We are in good form at the moment and I feel strong.”

“We made a good job this weekend and we will try to win more races because now we have a good level. The team was working really good, they did a perfect job. We will try to improve and enjoy these last races in Moto2.”
