Second overall on opening day for Aleix Espargaro

Second overall on opening day for Aleix Espargaro

NGM Forward Racing’s Aleix Espargaro started the weekend strongly, finishing second overall on the opening day of the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

An impressive time of 2’01.393s saw the eldest Espargaro brother just 0.014s behind Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda). This put the Forward Yamaha rider 0.023s ahead of Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP), who was third.

Espargaro was also able to show good pace in FP2, a session hit by rain. The Spanish rider finished in fifth with Lorenzo topping the session. A 2’14.503s set Lorenzo a second faster than all but Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda). Aleix Espargaro was however within a second of Pedrosa in third.

Confidence and a basic bike setting from the pre-season tests provided Espargaro with a strong base to work from across the Friday sessions.

“We were competitive here in the pre-season test, so that gave us a good base to work off. I’m really happy about we started here in Malaysia. I was excited for this GP. I hope it doesn’t rain in the race as we might have to stop the race because it rains so hard here,” said Espargaro.

On the chance of a wet race, he added, “Everyday in the afternoon it rains! As soon as it was OK to try I left the pits in the wet. I felt great, but we had some problems with the electronics. There was a lot of spin so I really had to work hard on the throttle to control it all.  I was competitive and close to third, we just need to beat my brother, Smith and Iannone.”
