Zarco sets the pace in intermediate class test

At the Valencia circuit on Tuesday Frenchman Johann Zarco set the pace in the Moto2 class.

A busy pit lane on the first of three days at the Spanish track saw the majority of the riders from the 2015 Moto2™ grid in attendance, with three sessions over the course of the day giving them a chance to find their rhythm after the winter break.

Some teams held a brief test last week at Almeria, further south down the Spanish Mediterranean coast, but this was the first test of the year for the collective grid.

Zarco (Ajo Motorsport) was Tuesday’s fastest rider, with a rapid 1’34.754 best lap on the Kalex in the final session of the afternoon, having also led the second session of the day.

Englishman Sam Lowes (Speed Up Racing) warmed up for his second season in the World Championship with the second quickest time of the day – his best time coming in the second session and 0.352s behind Zarco on the overall timesheet. He was the only non-Kalex rider in the top ten.

World Champion Tito Rabat (Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS) suffered three crashes, ending the day with a cut to one of his arms and the third best lap time. Rabat’s new colleague, Moto3 World Champion Alex Marquez, continued his adaptation to 600cc machinery in 26th place, three seconds off the pace.

Thomas Luthi (Derendinger Racing Interwetten) was fourth best overall, the Swiss rider lapping 0.44s behind Zarco in session three.

Belgian Xavier Simeon (Federal Oil Gresini Moto2) completed the top five, 0.5s down on Zarco, with his fastest time coming in the midday session.

Paginas Amarillas HP 40 pairing of Moto2 rookie Alex Rins and his former lightweight class rival Luis Salom were sixth and seventh respectively, both less than a second off the pace having switched from Öhlins to WP suspension.

Franco Morbidelli (Italtrans Racing Team), Jonas Folger (AGR Team) and Simone Corsi (Forward Racing) completed the top ten. Testing continues over the next two days in Valencia.
