Crutchlow: “I did my fast lap with 32 laps on the tyre”

12th a disappointing result for Cal Crutchlow on the opening day of practice at the German GP, big steps needed ahead of Qualifying.

Friday was a puzzling day for Cal Crutchlow (CWM LCR Honda), who was unable to benefit from new tyres at the end of the session. This left the Isle of Man resident way down the order in 12th, a result that initially looks quite worrying.

Some hope can be taken from the fact that Crutchlow’s best time of 1’22.425 came on an extremely old tyre, indicating his pace of race distance is strong. Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) was setting similar times in his race simulations.

Cal Crutchlow: “I don’t think we warrant being in 12th position considering the effort put in today by myself and the team. I did my fast lap with 32 laps on the tyre, so when I put a new tyre at the end of the session I didn’t benefit at all. I had a lot of sliding and the tyre felt unpredictable.”

“Hopefully we can take a look through the data tonight and erase any doubts about why we never went any faster, maybe there was something wrong with the tyre. We definitely need to improve even though I got held up twice on my fast lap, but I think we are competitive although maybe not enough at the minute. I hope that improves tomorrow.”
