Marquez: “Maybe I could get very close to 1’59.00”

A small mistake costs Marc Marquez a 1’59s time at the Octo British Grand Prix, but he still produced a new pole record.

As in Brno, Indianapolis and the Sachsenring before, Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) has looked strong all weekend, only bested by Movistar Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo. FP4 saw the double MotoGP™ World Champion make a step forward and close in on Lorenzo who had previously looked untouchable. Last year saw the two locked in fierce battle and Sunday’s race looks set to be another classic Silverstone clash.

This is Marquez’s 28th pole position in the MotoGP™ class and his third pole position record of the year. The only Spanish rider with more premier class pole positions is Jorge Lorenzo. Silverstone may prove critical in the championship battle with Valentino Rossi seemingly unable to find the same pace as Marquez and Lorenzo, giving the Honda rider a chance to regain vital points.

Marc Marquez: ”It was a good qualifying session. When I did the first lap I noticed that if put together the perfect lap, maybe I could get very close to 1’59.00. But I noticed I was right on the limit a couple of times, and especially in the last sector I was missing a little something under braking. In the end what counts is that we took pole position! You can always improve, but it was a very good lap."
