Lorenzo Baldassarri takes victory in the fifth edition of the karting event held in tribute to Marco Simoncelli.
The Misanino Kart Circuit, located within the grounds of the Misano World Circuit 'Marco Simoncelli', hosted the fifth edition of the ‘Spurtlèda58’ on Wednesday night.
Just ahead of the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, the now traditional Spurtlèda58 drew in top riders from all categories as well as a host of local fans. All eager to celebrate and pay tribute to the late Marco Simoncelli.
The grid saw the likes of MotoGP™ stars Valentino Rossi, Andrea Dovizioso, Scott Redding, Michele Pirro, Jack Miller, Alex De Angelis and Loris Baz take part amongst many others. Representing the Moto2™ riders were Sam Lowes, Matia Pasini, Xavier Simeon, Hafizh Syahrin and Jonas Folger with Matteo Ferrari, Francesco Bagnaia, Andrea Locatelli, Niccolo Antonelli, Danny Kent, Andrea Migno and Karel Hanika adding some Moto3™ aggression to the mix.
The first race of the event begun at 20:15 Local Time, amongst the Moto3™ riders Ferrari was fastest in the heats while Pasini led in Moto2™ after a hard fought battle with Baldassarri. Spectators were able to witness an excellent show before the grand final had even begun.
In the finale it was an all-Italian affair with Rossi, Ferrari, Baldassarri, Bastianini, Migno and Dovizioso lining up together on the grid. A ferocious battle for victory ensued, frantic and full of touches between the riders. Andrea Dovizioso led for 11 out of the 12 laps but it was Baldassarri who emerged victorious in a dramatic final lap. Ferrari and Dovizioso completed the podium with Rossi only able to finish fifth.
Proceeds from the event were donated to the Marco Simoncelli Foundation.
