Crutchlow: “I know tenth as a result looks quite bad”

Cal Crutchlow happy with his tenth place on the opening day of practice at the San Marino GP.

LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow remained optimistic about the Gran Premio TIM di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini despite a less than ideal start to the Gran Prix. Free Practice 1 saw the Brit finish in a respectable ninth, but as Crutchlow went to push in the afternoon session he fell at Turn 10. This tricky corner saw a total of nine riders fall there across all three classes, fortunately both Crutchlow and his LCR Honda avoided major damage in the fall. It did force Crutchlow to switch bikes, meaning he was unable to benefit from the softer rear to set a fast time.

His confidence remains intact and Crutchlow is already preparing for Saturday with a clear plan on how to go faster. In 2013, Crutchlow took his best MotoGP™ result at Misano with sixth and no doubt he’ll be looking to improve on that come Sunday. With Misano’s tight opening section a strong result in Qualifying will be critical come race day if Crutchlow wants to avoid early race incidents.

Cal Crutchlow: “Honestly I’m quite pleased with the day. I know tenth as a result looks quite bad, but I only made about four fast laps in the second session as I crashed after about three laps. I think we made a mistake as I kept the front tyre from this morning’s session as we thought there wasn’t much wear, and I had a new rear tyre – so when I pushed we overloaded the front end a bit. It wasn’t a big crash, but that was a small mistake I made.”

“After having to change between bikes, we didn’t get proper benefit of the softer rear, so we didn’t put in too many fast laps times. But I’m confident we can go significantly faster tomorrow and be more consistent as in this morning’s session I felt great and was in ninth without any problems.”
