Sasaki takes victory in Zhuhai

The Japanese rider won the first of two races of the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup scheduled for this weekend in China.

Ayumu Sasaki won the first of two Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup races held at the Zhuhai International Circuit, running alongside the Pan Delta Super Racing Festival in front of more than 10,000 spectators.

The 17-lap race saw the leader of the overall standings beat out countrymen Ai Ogura (scoring his first podium) and Yuta Date. The day began with the Qualifying battle that saw Malaysian Rasol Shafiq absent, due to a broken finger on his left hand as a result of falling in Free Practice. The Malaysian Adam Norrodin took his first pole of the year, ahead of Japanese duo Kunimine and Sasaki.

The race was marked with an intense duel between four Japanese riders, the three podium finishers alongside Kunimine, with poleman Norrodin involved too. Ogura was especially active, leading the race several times and lurking behind was Sasaki, assessing the leader’s ability and expertise. The last lap was decisive. Norrodin fell while Sasaki beat Ogura at the finish line, winning out by just 32 thousandths of a second.

A noteworthy performance from the very young Japanese rider Yamanaka, who finished a brilliant sixth place as well as local debutante Shengjunjie Zhou, who scored points with a 14th place finish.

Sasaki extends his lead in the overall standings with 126 points, 35 more than Kunimine and 37 ahead of Atiratphuvapat who only managed ninth today.

Alberto Puig: “It was a good race, without remarkable incidents which is our priority. The heat was intense, as is usual here, yet they were able to run at a high pace. Clearly there were two groups, the battle at the head was interesting. We will see tomorrow.”

The second race of the Shell Advance Asia Talent Cup scheduled in Zhuhai will be held on Sunday morning at 12:30 Local Time.
