Bastianini: “It was not an easy race”

A fantastic and hard fought Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon ends in disaster for Enea Bastianini, crashing on the final lap.

Round 14 of the Moto3™ World Championship produced another classic ten rider battle at the front, positions being traded at almost everyone corner. Enea Bastianini was, as ever, right in the mix and pushing hard for victory and to reduce his disadvantage in the World Championship standings to Danny Kent (Leopard Racing). The Gresini Racing Team Moto3 rider had opted for a soft front tyre, going against the norm in Moto3™ but all riders expereienced quite severe tyre degradation, especially on the left hand side f the tyre, towards the end of the race.

With a near kilometer long straight at the MotorLand Aragon circuit , slipsteam was a critical concern for riders in the lead and Bastianini was positioning himself perfectly to use the slipstream on the final lap to slip past for victory. Sadly the Italian’s challenge would end prematurely, as he crashed at Turn 14 after touching Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo). Fortunatley for Bastianini’s title hopes, Kent fell just a few corners after resulting in neither of the pair scorign points, thus leaving the gap at 55 points with four rounds to go.

Enea Bastianini: “On the last lap, entering Turn 14, I was hard on the brakes, while in front of me Binder took a completely different line from mine, and we touched. It happens and I can’t blame him. I was not going to pass him on that corner, I would have tried to overtake him in the straight, in order to attack Oliveira on the last corner. It was not an easy race, because in the final stages the rear tyre was quite worn on the left side and the bike was moving a lot. In those conditions it was nice to be still able to stay in the fight for the victory, although obviously I would rather get to the checkered flag... Too bad, we missed an opportunity to recover other points on Kent, but now we look forward to the next races”
