Lorenzo shrugs off shoulder injury to top FP1

Jorge Lorenzo showed no ill effects of his sprained shoulder to set the fastest time in FP1 ahead of Andrea Iannone and Valentino Rossi.

The MotoGP™ field took to the Twin Ring Motegi for the first time this weekend and it was Movistar Yamaha’s Lorenzo who laid down an impressive marker by setting a 1’45.432 to dispel any doubts that the shoulder he sprained in training would affect him. The Spaniard topped the timesheets for most of the session, and set his best time on his last lap to finish less than a second of Andrea Dovizioso’s 2014 Pole Record (1’44.502).

Ducati Team’s Andrea Iannone, who is also carrying a shoulder injury, was 0.395s further back in second ahead of the man leading the MotoGP™ standings by 14 points, Valentino Rossi (+0.412s). The ‘Doctor’ making the most of the ideal track conditions at Motegi (33˚C) to complete the provisional front row in third.

Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Bradley Smith (+0.456s) got off to great start and ended the session in fourth less than half a second behind the pace of Lorenzo as the leading Satellite rider. Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa (+0.464s) was just a further 0.008s back in fifth as he looks for his third MotoGP™ victory at Motegi.

Ducati Team’s Dovizioso (+0.515s) was in sixth, with Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez (+0.533s) in seventh after breaking the fifth Metacarpal on his left hand in the run-up to the GP. Aleix Espargaro (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) and Stefan Bradl (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) completed the top ten, despite the latter crashing late on at turn 11.

LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow was eleventh, just ahead of the leading Open class machine of Hector Barbera (Avintia Racing). Scott Redding (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) finished the session in 16th ahead of Nicky Hayden (Aspar MotoGP Team) who has announced he will leave MotoGP™ for WorldSBK at the end of the season. Australian Jack Miller (LCR Honda) was 22nd and Eugene Laverty (Aspar MotoGP Team) ended the session in 25th.
