Marquez on top in FP3

Marquez on top in FP3

Marc Marquez leads the way in the crucial FP3 session ahead of Jorge Lorenzo and Cal Crutchlow.

Repsol Honda’s Marquez set the fastest lap of the weekend so far during Saturday morning’s Free Practice 3 in cool but dry conditions (Track temp. 21˚C) at Phillip Island. The Spaniard set a 1’29.081 to finish on top of the combined timesheets in the session that decides who makes it through to Q2 automatically.

Marquez appeared to have the upper hand over Movistar Yamaha’s Lorenzo, who failed to improve his time from Friday, finishing 0.352s ahead of his nearest rival.

LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow (+0.428s) was the Satellite cat amongst the factory pigeons as the British rider stuck his factory spec RC213V on the provisional front row in third. Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Maverick Viñales (+0.437s) also failed to improve on his time from Friday, but it was still good enough to end the session in fourth overall. Andrea Iannone (+0.463s) on the Ducati Team GP15 was fifth as he also failed to improve his time on Saturday morning.

EG 0,0 Marc VDS’s Scott Redding (+0.594s) was another Brit rider to have a good session, as he improved on his Friday time by over a second to move up to sixth and secure his place in Q2.

Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi improved his time by over two-tenths to secure his spot in Q2 in seventh, ahead of the second Repsol Honda of Dani Pedrosa. The Italian made use of winglets for the first time during the session, as he looks to close the gap to his title rival Lorenzo before Qualifying.

Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith left it until his last lap to ensure he would not have to fight it out in Q1 to finish in ninth, with Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) taking the last spot in Q2 in tenth.

Aleix Espargaro (Team Suzuki Ecstar) missed out on automatic qualification to Q2 by just 0.020s as he ended the session in eleventh overall, with Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Racing) and Jack Miller (LCR Honda) also missing out by less than a tenth of a second.

Aspar MotoGP Team’s Nicky Hayden and Eugene Laverty with 15th and 19th respectively while Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha tech 3) found himself down in 16th as he continues to try and rediscover his confidence after his big crash at Motegi.
