Lowes: “I thought this was gonna be a disaster”

Lowes: “I thought this was gonna be a disaster”

Sam Lowes secures his second best result of the season with a determined ride to second at the Pramac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

A gamble with gear ratios on the grid didn’t pay off for Sam Lowes, the change of just a single tooth saw him lose out dramatically down the straight. During the course of the Australian GP, the Speed Up Racing rider had appeared as one of the only riders able to match the pace of Alex Rins (Paginas Amarillas HP 40). The opening laps saw the two relatively close, but as Rins settled into his rhythm the pace was simply too much for Lowes. However, the Brit was pleased with his performance as a podium in a class as competitive as the Moto2™ World Championship is always an achievement.

Sam Lowes: “In the race we changed the gearing a little so when I came onto the straight they came by me and I thought this was gonna be a disaster after going the wrong direction. It worked well during the lap but down the straight it was impossible. A little mistake on our side, it was just a tooth longer than we had in practice. You know I was pushing to keep what we had in practice but you just don’t know with the slipstream because the other ratio was too short. Rins had better pace than me all weekend so fair play to him. To get 20 points is really good and I love this place, it’s nice for me.”
