Lorenzo: “We had big problems with the brakes”

Lorenzo: “We had big problems with the brakes”

Bitter disappointment for Jorge Lorenzo as he is robbed of front row start in the dying seconds of Qualifying.

Free Practice 4 saw Jorge Lorenzo suffer an uncharacteristic crash while on the brakes into Turn 15. The Movistar Yamaha rider was immediately on his feet and back in the pits, the crash caused by an issue with the brakes. Unfortunately these issues persisted and although he didn’t fall during Q2, Lorenzo encountered problems at Turn 4 and did not have enough power in the brakes to stop as he would have liked. The brakes would work when aggressively shut, but Lorenzo was unable to use them in his usual silky smooth style and his lap time suffered as a result. Even in the face of these issues Lorenzo looked on course to secure a front row start.

Teammate and title rival Valentino Rossi had other ideas, the Italian stealing third from Lorenzo in the last moments. Lorenzo only found out he had been pushed off the front row when he was turned away from parc ferme. Sunday looks set to be a hard fought affair as Lorenzo’s race pace throughout the weekend has been strong but both the Repsol Honda riders have made a step. The Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix is a critical race for the title battle, Rossi has his first chance to take the title and Lorenzo needs to finish on the podium to head to Valencia with a realistic chance of fighting for the 2015 MotoGP™ World Championship.

Jorge Lorenzo: “In free practice four and qualifying we had big problems with the brakes, when I arrived at turn four I couldn‘t brake, the power of the brake arrived suddenly in the middle, but I wasn‘t able to brake on the first part and couldn‘t stop unless it was a very aggressive stop, that was the main problem this afternoon. In every braking section I‘m losing too much and I was unable to recover in acceleration what I lost on braking. It was a pity to lose the front row, but I think that if we solve this problem, we can be competitive for the race.”
