Marquez: “I am finding things harder with fresh tyres here”

Marc Marquez completes a Repsol Honda 1-2 at the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix, 0.409s from pole.

Throughout the weekend Marc Marquez has produced some truly stunning laps around the Sepang International Circuit and many expected him to be the main pole contender. But Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa produced a record breaking lap and Marquez was unable to match it, setting a 1’59.462 to end 0.409s behind Pedrosa. Marquez had been on a flying lap, but a huge moment saw him lose confidence and was thus unable to close the gap further. Regardless of Qualifying performance, Marquez is confident in his race pace.

One wrinkle in his others near perfect plan is the fact Marquez is finding the going tough on fresh tyres. With the first two corners in Sepang being incredibly tight, a strong start is critical as a poor one can see a MotoGP™ rider shuffled down the order. If he can overcome his issues on new tyres then Marquez again looks set to be involved in the battle for victory which is building to be another epic clash, especially due to Valentino Rossi’s off track antics.

Marc Marquez: “Dani did a great lap, which was difficult to beat! We will try to give 100% from the start of the race, which I think will be tough physically, but I think we are good in terms of our race pace. I am finding things harder with fresh tyres here – compared to other circuits – especially the front and that was seen when I came close to crashing! We have been doing quite well during the weekend; we’re not totally comfortable but we’re handling the situation well and finding our race pace."
