Zarco: “I think I could have taken pole position”

A late spit of rain ends Johann Zarco’s chances of claiming pole for the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix.

The penultimate Qualifying session of the 2015 Moto2™ World Championship ended early due to spits of rain in Sepang, riders forced into the pits on several occasions as the rain flags came out. This situation was disappointing for Johann Zarco as he was unable to catch Tom Luthi, the Ajo Motorsport rider felt he had the speed to challenge for pole had he been able to do his final two laps. Despite the disappointment of missing pole, Zarco takes to the front row for the twelfth time in 2015.

This strong performance came after a crash in FP3, which Zarco fortunately escaped from unharmed.  Zarco’s goal for the race is to fight the likes of Luthi for victory, the Frenchman having taken a significant step since the start of the weekend. Both riders appear to have very similar race pace, but the weather could play a role in proceedings and a wet race would be a step into the unknown as the Moto2™ riders are yet to have any wet track time at Sepang. Even if the race is not wet, overnight rain would drastically alter the grip levels and require a change of setting during Warm Up. In either circumstance Zarco feels confident of challenging towards the front.

Johann Zarco: “I'm a little disappointed, because had it not been for the session ending early, I think I could have taken pole position. On my best lap I made a small mistake that did not allow me to put myself first, but I'm not worried, because second place is very good and above all my pace is very good for the race tomorrow. I am calm, as so far we have done a good job. I am not thinking about records; I just want to win, because this feeling is fantastic. This weekend I'm very happy, because in Australia it was very difficult and we were always far back. Here we have always been first or second, so tomorrow we want to have fun."
