Baz: “I didn’t expect to be so close”

A great Ducati debut for Loris Baz as he and his Avintia Racing team work on perfecting the Frenchman’s rider position.

As the tallest rider on the MotoGP™ grid, Loris Baz has a more difficult time than many others when finding his riding position. From the start Baz knew he would need a longer seat unit to accommodate his size but unfortunately the resources were not available at the test for Avintia Racing to create a new seat unit. Instead the team chose to raise the Frenchman’s height in the seat, it was not a perfect solution but it did help him to ride in a more comfortable manner and set the 12th fastest time over the two day test. A 1’31.796 was 1.5 seconds faster than his best lap of the race and over half a second quicker than his best practice lap as the Frenchman got to grips with the GP14.2.

Not only was Baz learning a new motorcycle, he was also adapting to the Michelin tyres which all of the MotoGP™ grid will run in 2016. Although Baz suffered a crash while pushing for a fast lap, he enjoyed the new tyres and felt there was a lot of untapped potential with them. Baz himself was surprised with his position at the end of the test, just 0.841s slower than Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) at the top and within 0.2s of leading Ducati Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team). Initial times are promising for Baz who now travels to Jerez for a private test where he will begin to work with the new 2016 electronics package.

Loris Baz: “I’m very happy with my first test with the team and Ducati. Yesterday we have to work hard to find the best position on the bike, and although is not perfect yet, with the resources we had, my mechanics made a higher seat. It was not possible to make it longer, but maybe for the next test at Jerez we’ll have some new parts. I’m also happy with the Ducati. I felt great from the first exit and also I felt comfortable with the new Michelin tyres. Some riders complained about the new tyres, but I had good feedback. This morning I crashed when I was doing a fast lap, but in the afternoon I tried again and I was even faster, so I’m very happy because I finished very close to the front guys. To be honest I didn’t expect to be so close, because my position on the bike still not perfect and I difficult for me to brake hard into the corners. Because of that, I’m looking forward to go to Jerez where I will try the new electronic, but at least I knew the one we used during these two days.”
